Are you happy with your vocabulary? I mean really happy with it? Or does it leave you feeling like you’re missing something the rest of the word has a grasp on? Are you intimidated when you hear other people use big, fancy words that you aren’t familiar with?

Having an extensive, dictionary-like vocabulary isn’t necessary, but it is good to have an expanded vocabulary. This will not only improve your speech, but your writing as well.

Benefits of Good Vocabulary:

• Communicate more effectively.
• Improves self-confidence.
• Improves self-esteem.
• Adds sophistication to speech.
• Better/more job offers.
• Improves people’s perception of you.

Drawbacks of Bad or Limited Vocabulary:

• Poor communication.
• Misinterpretations.
• Low self-confidence.
• Low self-esteem.
• Appear uneducated.
• Lowers people’s perception of you.

Now let me clarify “appearing uneducated” in the drawbacks. Many educated people have limited vocabulary and it makes them appear uneducated. Many uneducated people have taken the time to improve their vocabulary and appear to be highly educated.

This is one thing that good or bad vocabulary has power over: You can be the smartest person on the planet, but if you’re lacking in the area of good vocabulary, people will never see you as an intelligent person. You can also be the dumbest person on earth, but if you have good vocabulary; people will think you’re smart. It boils down to perceptions, or misperceptions and a person’s command of language.

The majority of people aren’t out to impress you with their language skills, they just enjoy having a good grasp on speech and using better words to convey or clarify a message.

A lady goes into a sandwich shop and asks for minimal lettuce on her sandwich.
The clerk replies, “I’m sorry, we only have iceberg lettuce.”

Clearly, the lady was not trying to impress the clerk or make her look dumb, because minimal is a pretty common word. But the clerk, who hasn’t taken the time to expand her vocabulary and word knowledge, makes herself look dumb.

Using synonyms is another good way to expand your list of words. Always keep a dictionary handy to use when you hear a new word and are unsure of it’s meaning, or keep pen and paper handy to jot these words down so you can look them up later.

Since acquiring the ProBlogger.com domain in 2007, Darren Rowse has hinted at developing the .com area of his brand a few times. Recently he announced that the domain would be used as the home of a forthcoming ProBlogger community.

I am happy to announce that the new ProBlogger Discussion Forum is now live. The forum costs $1.95 a month (which is much less than I thought it would cost). Since I signed up to receive updates about the site, I was lucky enough to find out about the community earlier today. So I’ve been able to hang out in the forum and check it out for you guys.

Firstly, I need to point out that the site isn’t officially live per say. The website did launch today and Darren has twittered about it however he has not announced it on ProBlogger as yet so that any bugs can be ironed out over the next few days. So for all intents and purposes, this can be considered a beta launch.

As I write this, around 450 people have signed up to the forum today and nearly all of them have posted already, which gives the impression of an established forum rather than one which was only online a few hours.

Maybe it’s not possible to give a fair review of a forum after one day but my first impressions of this new community have been nothing but positive. Perhaps it’s because it’s a private forum but there is a real sense of community, a real sense that everyone wants to help their fellow members out.

The forum seems to have a good mix already of complete newbies and experienced bloggers and everyone seems to be getting on well. And since the forum requires a subscription, it doesn’t attract spammers who pointlessly reply to any thread just so that their website is linked in their signature.

There are 9 forum rooms in total including those you would find on other web development forums like blog design, promotion, writing etc. Without doubt my favourite room is the Collaboration room, a place where you can meet like minded bloggers for joint projects, networking and so on.

I know that there is always going to be a large percentage of people who are not keen on paying for any website on the internet. However, I have no doubt in my mind that this small cost will prove to be a bargain. For less than $25 a year you can get advice from hundreds of experienced bloggers and get the chance to develop good relationships with them too.

At the moment the forum is incredibly busy with around 450 members. It wouldn’t surprise me if the member base exceeded 5,000 after Darren announces it on ProBlogger, which would make it without doubt the number 1 forum for bloggers to hang out.

NFL Hall of Famer Fran Tarkenton, who has been critical of Favres act for awhile now, has described the whole scene surrounding his signing by the Vikings as a circus.

Tarkenton started his rant by suggesting that The Gunslinger had forever tarnished his legacy with his diva-like behavior:

“I really have no interest in what Brett Favre does. He kind of lost me a few years ago by retiring and unretiring and here and there. I asked a few friends here, maybe 10 or 12 people we were out with last night. I said, ‘What do you think about Brett Favre going back to the Vikings?’ You know who cared? Nobody. It’s good news for you guys. It’s good news for television and so forth but the last time I heard … football was a team sport, isn’t it? It’s not just about the quarterback.”

He later continued his criticism on ESPN:

“We have responsibilities we’re just not athletes that are in it all for ourself, football, is it not a team game? Isn’t it all about team … and here comes Brett Favre riding in on his white horse, doesn’t go to training camp, doesn’t come to offseason workouts and he’s gonna come on his white horse and bond with all these players.”

On Minneapolis sports radio station KFAN, Tarkenton continued his criticism:

“I think he has been a great flamboyant quarterback, but he has made more stupid plays than any great quarterback that I’ve ever seen. Look at his final game in a Packers uniform. He blew that game NFC championship against the Giants.

“I really think the whole Brett Favre saga of retiring, unretiring, three weeks ago saying ‘I can’t play,’ the Vikings said, ‘We’re moving on,’ it’s a circus. It’s an absolute circus, and it takes away from all the other things that are going on with the Vikings, with the NFL. We’re getting ready for a football season and this is a circus and I just have no interest in it.

“Wouldn’t you be upset if you’re a Packer fan? I think you’re going to have Packer fans burning the No. 4 Favre Green Bay jersey. I think the Packer fans have every right to be outraged.”

ESPN, in particular has turned on Favre. Now that theyve turned their attention toward portraying Michael Vick as a victim rather than a sociopath, they appear to be willing to throw Favre under the bus.
