Rich in Love: The individuals behind Driving Miss Daisy have taken Josephine Humphreys’ novel and tried difficult to knit another evocative Southern story but they don’t really triumph, although there are numerous fine scenes. The film is based on an adolescent trying to keep her family together. Amid the members are her idle dad (another awesome Finney depiction), missing mommy, and nutty sibling. Cast includes Albert Finney, Jill Clayburgh, Kathryn Erbe, Kyle MacLachlan, Piper Laurie, Ethan Hawke, Suzy Amis, and Alfie Woodard. (105 minutes, 1993)
Heartland: Basic, well informed tale of hearty Americans surviving the frontier life, circa 1910. Ferrell plays a youthful widow who acknowledges a job as housekeeper for dour rancher Tom in the wilds of Wyoming. Well performed, well filmed, and beautifully understated, based on the real journals of a pioneer lady. Cast includes Rip Torn, Conchata Ferrell, Barry Primus, Lilia Skala, Megan Folson, and Amy Wright. (100 minutes, 1979)
The Nutty Professor: Sherman Klump is a goofy chemistry professor who’s grossly obese. When he meets an attractive instructing assistant, he’s inspired to try his chemistry knowledge on DNA, reorganizing himself into a super stud. Eddie is appealing and persuading as the prof, and humorous as his doppelganger. Cast includes Eddie Murphy, Jada Pinkett, James Coburn, Dave Chappelle, Larry Miller, and John Ales. Foxfire: An adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates’ novel in reference to 4 high school gals who form a clique while an enigmatic lady drifter comes to town. The cast tries however they’re finished in by a terrible script that plays like an R-rated After School Particular. Cast includes Hedy Burress, Angelina Jolie, Jenny Lewis, Jenny Shimizu, Sarah Rosenberg, Peter Facinelli, Streak Mihok, Cathy Moriarty, Richard Beymer, and John Diehl. (102 minutes, 1996)
The Good Humor Man: Wide dry comedy in reference to ice cream dealer Cars On, who runs into a crime syndacate. Cast includes Jack Carson, Lola Albright, Jean Wallace, George Reeves, and Richard Egan. (79 minutes, 1950)
Dillinger and Capone: In 1940, discharged from prison, Al Capone (Abraham) holds the family of John Dillinger (Sheen) for ransom. Al desires the bank robber to recoup 150,000 dollars of Capone’s monies from a hotel in Chicago. The clever plot is increased by smooth acting jobs, although it eventually skids into a basic heist thriller. Cast includes Martin Sheen, F. Murray Abraham, Stephen Davies, Catherine Hicks, Don Stroud, Sasha Jenson, Michael Oliver, Jeffrey Combs, Michael C. Gwynne, Anthony Crivello, Bert Remsen, and Clint Howard. (94 minutes, 1995)
