Browsing For A Terrific Movie? Check Out These Excellent Movie Summaries

Never before has it been so excellent to be a film buff. Back in the day the only way that you could even see a movie was to visit the movie theater. Later on, videos came out and you could get a videotape at the store but the film that you wanted may have been out-of-stock and you still had to wait. You also needed to make sure that you avoided any late fees by making sure that you got the film back to the store on time. Now you can get the films by mail, but it is still a waiting game.

The Prince and the Showgirl – Somewhat decent but slow moving comedy of saucy American show gal Monroe being courted by Prince Regent of Carpathia (Olivier) throughout the’11 coronation of George V. Filmed in England, with excellent performances by Monroe and Olivier. Cast includes Marilyn Monroe, Laurence Olivier, Sybil Thorndike, Jeremy Spencer, and Richard Wattis. (117 minutes,’57)

Clue – Silly and insipid whodunit based on the fashionable board game of the same name with all the identifiable characters Mrs. Peacock, Colonel Mustard, Miss Red, et al. assembled for a murderous day in a Victorian mansion. Everyone tries enormously hard but there is nothing they can do to save this weak film. Cast includes Eileen Brennan, Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Martin Ponder, and Howard Hesseman. (87 minutes,’85)

The Night of the Iguana – Trudging tale based on Tennessee Williams play. Recovered alcoholic clergyman Burton, a bus-journey guide in Mexico, becomes involved with Kerr, Gardner, and Lyon. Dorothy Jeakins won an Oscar for her costumes. Cast includes Richard Burton, Deborah Kerr, Ava Gardner, Sue Lyon, Skip Ward, Grayson Chamber, and Cyril Delevanti. (118 minutes,’64)

Like Water for Chocolate – Striking and intense film from a book by Laura Esquivel set in the early part of the 20th century – a youthful girl’s life is conditioned by her serious and obstinate mom, who treats her terribly. Extravagant storyline, not without humor, with an outstanding cast and a top of the line performance from lead actress Cavazos. Cast includes Lumi Cavazos, Marco Leonardi, Regina Tome, Mario Ivan Martinez, and Ada Carrasco. (113 minutes,’92)

Far and Away – A scrappy Irish tenant farmer hooks up, in uncertain style, with the equally lively daughter of a affluent landowner, and together they journey to America to search for their final destiny in the’93 Oklahoma land rush. Exceptional platform for Tom and Nicole, who are both beautiful and involving; the dilemma is a severe deficiency of decent dialogue to fill the gaps between fight scenes. Cast includes Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Thomas Gibson, Robert Prosky, Barbara Babcock, Cohn Meaney, and Rance Howard. (140 minutes,’92)

Above the Law – This is Steven Segal’s breakout film. He plays a Chicago Cop who takes matters into his own hands. As the title implies, he is ‘above the law’. He uses his large body and martial arts skills to inflict chaos on the bad guys. Stars include Steven Segal, Pam Grier, and Sharon Stone. (1988 Action)
